We are in the beginning stages of several big projects!

  • Dakota Grange: In November 2017 the Dakota substation across from the new Genesee-Schmitz Elementary School in West Seattle will be surplussed and available for sale. It is a perfect place to build an indoor classroom and teaching kitchen large enough for all our Seattle Farm School community classes and to enrich the curriculum for the elementary across the street. The classroom building will be surrounded by food forest gardens, pollinator pathways, a greenhouse, hen house, and a pizza oven for community gatherings. We will be raising the capital needed to buy the land, design and build the classroom structure and have a permanent homebase for our classes and events!
  • Schmitz Park Elementary Proposal: We are working on a proposal for the Seattle School District to keep Schmitz Park Elementary (the old school), open as a Choice school with a focus on farm-to-school programs, an expanded school garden and urban farm similar to Nathan Hale High School, nature-based education within the Schmitz Park Preserve and project based STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Art & Math). The school grounds could be converted into several large areas including gardens, art and play areas for children, orchard, greenhouse, beehives, and an outdoor recreation & picnic area (summertime bbq and outdoor movies at the school? yes please!).
  • Summer Camp and Retreat Center: Someday we would love to run a retreat center that includes passive solar eco-friendly building designs, permaculture gardens, a gourmet kitchen and facilities that are plush enough for corporate retreats and sturdy enough for summer youth camps. Our hope for our current and future programs is to provide the training, education and opportunities that will help shape the future of our city as one of increased sustainability, cultivate artisans in food and craft, promote a strong local food economy, and to help grow the next generation of local farmers.
